Monocots comprise the majority of agricultural plants in terms of biomass produced. There are between 50,000 and 60,000 species within this group. The largest family in this group by number of species are the orchids with about twenty thousand species. The economically most important family in this group are the grasses. Many plants cultivated for their blooms are also from the monocot group, notably lilies, daffodils, irises, amaryllis, orchids, cannas, bluebells and tulips.

Orchid are one of the plants' group with very peculiar requirements. Fertile ground, light and water are not enough for them to survive. They are pollinated by insects, and they need fungi to sprout. Human activity often negatively reflects on orchids number.

Multitude of plants growing in Poland is astonishing. During our summer trips we often fail to notice some rare specimens in full bloom. Maybe the colourful world of plants presented in the pictures of Waldemar Szaraniec, shall encourage us to take a closer look of the plants surrounding us.
