Lemkivshchyna, sometimes called Lemkovyna, Lemkivshchyna, or Lemkowszczyzna, is the land of the Lemkos (Lemki). It includes the higher elevations of the Carpathians of modern-day Poland, extending to around the Poprad River to the west, and extending to the east as far as the region around Sanok. It is the land where the multitude of cross-roads shrines and cemeteries is accompanied by traditions fostered by locals.
It might seem that it is hard to find villages of Lemkos in Beskid Niski, nonetheless traces of the past can be found almost everywhere. Old abandoned wells, chapels lost in the woods, wooden orthodox churches are silent witnesses of the violent history of the region. People live here according to the rhythm of nature, fostering the traditional chores and cultivating memories from the past.
