The mouth of Vistula river developed in stages. In the first half of the XIX century the river branched into Nogat and Leniwka between Torun and Gdansk. When Leniwka got silted, Szkarpawa branched flowing towards the east. In 1840 Wisla Smiala developed, and in 1895 the new mouth of Vistula river was dug up.
